Hey, John.
Good morning.
Morning, Emily. I see you already got your coffee.
Yep. A vanilla latte. My usual. What about you?
I haven't ordered yet. I am thinking of getting an Americano.
Hey, that's actually a great word to start with. Americano.
Right. An Americano is a type of coffee. It's made with espresso and hot water. It's strong but not too bitter.
Exactly. And a latte like what you're drinking is espresso with steamed milk. Very creamy.
Okay, let's practice. Repeat after me.
Can I have a latte, please?
Again.
Can I have an Americano, please?
Nice. That's how you order coffee like a native speaker.
Oh, here comes the barista. I'm going to order now.
Great. Listen to the conversation, everyone.
Hi there. What can I get started for you?
Hi, I'll have a medium Americano, please.
Would you like room for cream?
No thanks. Just black is fine.
That'll be $4.50.
Here you go.
Okay, let's explain a few things.
When the barista says, "Would you like room for cream?" she's asking if you want space in your cup to add milk or cream.
And "just black" means you don't want anything added. No milk, no sugar.
Let's practice. Repeat after me.
Just black, please.
One medium Americano, please.
Here you go.
All right, I've got my coffee and my muffin. I'm ready to sit and chat.
Nice. You always go for a muffin.
Can't help it. Banana muffins are my weakness.
All right, let's talk about today's real-life English.
How do you start a conversation at a coffee shop?
Great question. You can say something simple like, "This place is really cozy."
Or, "I love the smell of coffee in here."
Let's try it together. Repeat after me.
This place is really cozy.
I love the smell of coffee.
Now, imagine you're meeting a friend. You could say, "How's your morning going? It's casual and friendly."
Yeah. Or something like, "Did you have trouble finding the place?"
That's useful when you're meeting at a new coffee shop.
Let's practice. Repeat after me.
How's your morning going?
Did you have trouble finding the place?
So, Emily, how is your morning going now that I've got coffee?
Much better. I was running late. Didn't even eat breakfast.
Same here. This muffin is technically my first meal.
Let's teach that phrase, too.
"I was running late." It means you didn't have enough time and you were almost late.
"Technically, my first meal." This means officially or basically it's the first thing I've eaten today.
Okay, time to practice. Repeat after me.
I was running late.
This is technically my first meal.
This coffee is perfect. I really needed this today.
Me, too. Sometimes a good cup of coffee and a quick chat makes everything better.
Speaking of which, I should probably head to work soon.
Same here. Let's do this again next week.
Definitely. Same time, same place.
You got it.
Repeat after me.
It was great catching up.
Let's do this again soon.
Take care.
Or if you're in a hurry, repeat after me.
Sorry, I've got to run.
Talk to you later.
Great job today, everyone.
